Responsible for managing global health and safety program (HASP) across all company locations in the USA and Canada. Accountable for development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HASP strategy and objectives that are compliant with applicable government regulations and internal company standards and values. Ensures an effective workplace safety program and culture of safety is in place.

 

Detailed Description 

  • Oversees HASP across all company locations in the USA and Canada, providing guidance and any necessary interpretations, changes and improvements, compliance-ready written programs and standardized tools and training for the organization.
  • Ensures HASP is implemented consistently across global organization.
  • Builds and manages online and in person safety training program for company global branches.
  • Oversees organizational compliance for global operations with local, state, provincial, and federal health and safety regulations, particularly for project work, including due diligence of health and safety activities in mergers, acquisitions, and integration opportunities.
  • Manages risk control and risk management insurance program, including coordinates claim activities, participates in regular claims reviews, leverages resources available through brokers and carrier partners, manages claims in conjunction with local branch leaders, coordinates with group and regional controllers to ensure claim reserves are maintained, and supports claims process throughout life cycle to ensure consistency and competence.
  • Coordinates health and safety activities with local branch leadership to build rapport, to celebrate current success, and identify those for socializing best practices, and to support various compliance activities.
  • Works with senior leaders to identify annual safety goals and training needs, foster relationships, advise on implications of current and emerging health and safety legislation, including evaluating options, making recommendations and generating action plans to ensure compliance.
  • Manages web-based contractor safety management systems, including ISNetWorld, PICS/Avetta, and Browz, and develops and maintains ways of socializing grades and how to improve.
  • Manages regulatory agency reporting requirements, inspections, and spearheads any correctives actions or findings from inspections.
  • Implements and monitors new safety program and emerging safety technologies.
  • Provides support to contract negotiations that include requirements for safety.
  • Manages branch-level reporting submissions, and web-based collection systems to collect and report to senior leadership.
  • Continues to improve system with 3rd party service provider.
  • Develops regular monthly, quarterly, and annual health and safety metric reports for review and socialization.

Job Requirements 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical knowledge in occupational health and safety - 5 years required; 10 years preferred
  • International experience, specifically Canada, UK, South America - 2 years required; 5 years preferred
  • LEAN, six sigma or similar continuous process improvement methodologies - 1 year required; 3 years preferred
  • Field work, including real-world application of knowledge learned - 3 years required; 5 years preferred
  • Strong industry awareness, including warehousing, distribution, industrial construction - 1 year required; 3 years preferred

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Risk, safety or related required; Masters’ Degree preferred
  • CSP or ASP/GSP working towards CSP, 10/30-hour OSHA coursework, first aid, CPR, or AED - preferred

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong knowledge and comprehension of current federal, provincial, state and local safety regulations
  • Ability to demonstrate managerial courage, including managing varied interests representing potential conflicts
  • Ability to lead and support cross-functional teams
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities as an independent contributor or as part of a team.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license with clean driving record, reliable transportation to and from work and willing to travel (approximately 20%).
  • Proficient in Quickbase and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Proven excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  Effective time management and multi-tasking skills

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • General Office – Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing and walking for up to 10% of the time.
  • Work may require excessive bending or stooping.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employee required to organize and coordinate schedules.
  • Employee required to analyze and interpret complex data.
  • Employee required to calibrate precise measurements.
  • Employee required to problem-solve.
  • Employee required to communicate with the public.
