Mr. Carey Vermeulen, a name widely recognized as a successful Property Restoration Specialist, Industry Advocate/Consultant and Certification Instructor since 1982, involving water, mould and fire damage. Carey has successfully restored thousands of properties, both residential and commercial, after catastrophe has struck, working primarily in the Toronto and surrounding areas. Carey has also worked on large losses after major flooding throughout the mid-west and southern USA.

Carey’s long standing dedication to the Restoration Industry has been apparent, as shown by his commitment to volunteering with the IICRC since 1991.

One of the longest current IICRC volunteers, Carey has served in more IICRC capacities than anyone in IICRC history, serving 17 years as a Board of Director with 5 years as vice president and 3 years as president. During Carey’s tenure as President, IICRC became an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) accredited standards writing organization.

Carey has volunteered on all IICRC standing committees, including the development of IICRC/ANSI S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration, IICRC/ANSI S520 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Mould Remediation, IICRC/ANSI S100 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Cleaning and was the Chair of the IICRC S300 Standard and Reference guide for Professional Upholstery Cleaning.

As a volunteer member of the IICRC Marketing Committee, Carey has been instrumental in marketing the use of IICRC certified firms and technicians to the insurance industry and different levels of government (including CMHC) in both Canada and the USA.

As IICRC President, Carey also had the vision to gain “Third Party Accreditation” to IICRC exams. This will bring ANSI Accreditation to the individual certifications, which in turn will make IICRC certification designations the “most recognized certification” for the insurance industry and different levels of government. The new IICRC MRS “Mould Removal Specialist” exam is the first of its kind for the IICRC.

Carey commenced his teaching career with Indoor Environmental Management in Indianapolis, as an AMRT instructor in 2004. He became Director of Education for the Indianapolis school, before starting his own training and consulting business, Indoor Air Management Canada, and has partnered with Hazmasters to provide IICRC training coast to coast across Canada.

Today Carey is among the busiest IICRC instructors, averaging over 70 classes a year with Hazmasters, primarily for the restoration and insurance industries and maintains among the highest student pass rate.

Carey continues to volunteer as a public speaker at industry related events, writes technical articles and provides consulting services to the restoration, cleaning and insurance industries. His ability to relate to and put himself on the same level as the contractor or adjuster makes him a true asset to the industry.
